Reinfection with Omicron subvariants rare: Study

According to a Danish study, getting infected twice with two different subvariants of Omicron is possible, but rare.

In Denmark, the more infectious BA.2 sublineage of the Omicron variant has fast outdone the original BA.1 variant. However, it has been uncertain if an individual could get infected by both the variants.

Now, a study led by researchers at the country’s top infectious disease authority, Statens Serum Institut (SSI), has suggested that people infected with BA.1 can get infected with BA.2 shortly afterwards, though it is rare. The reinfections mostly affected the young, unvaccinated individuals and caused mild disease. The reinfections did not lead to hospitalizations or deaths.

Investigators noted 1,739 cases registered from November 21, 2021, through February 11, 2022, where people had tested positive twice between 20 and 60 days apart. From a smaller sample, the researchers identified 47 cases of BA.2 reinfections shortly after BA.1 infection. They identified less virus material at the time of reinfection, pointing to some amount of immunity following the first infection.
